At it's simplest form, anyone who chooses to get on the internet needs an ISP to supply broadband, DSL, or Dial-up access to the internet. One needs an appropriate modem, and a computer to connect to the modem.
In expanding to a LAN, where several computer users can get online, a router or switch is needed for multiple users to plug in.
If you would like to allow wireless mobile users on your network, one of the "users" on your LAN should not be a person & their PC, but instead, a device referred to as wireless router or wireless switch. While this allows wired connections, it also has a signal which communicates with the wireless antennae on a personal computer or laptop. The WLAN is born.
